Abstract

Art can not only be interpreted as a product of creativity and beauty, but can also be used as a medium for conveying moral messages and religious values as has been done by prophets, companions, and scholars spreading Islam worldwide. Through a library research method with a historical research approach, this study aims to reveal the long history of the use of art as a medium of da'wah in the spread of Islam specifically in the Arab region. From this research, it was found that there were several forms of art used for preaching since the time of the Prophet Muhammad, including the art of mosque architecture, calligraphy, literature, and music and dance performances. The development of the role of each of the arts mentioned above continues to change along with the rapid spread and teaching of Islamic law in the Arab region at that time, even these arts are still often encountered today either in the scope of da'wah or just a channel for the creativity of a Muslim. One thing that researchers can confirm is that no work of art is made without the purpose of conveying value from the creator to the audience.
